THE GTC CONCEPT WAS ONE OF THE STARS OF THE SHOW AT GENEVA IN MARCH. ACCORDING TO THE MEN BEHIND THE CONCEPT, IT PROMISES TO BE FAR MORE THAN JUST A DESIGN EXERCISE - AND WHAT THE GTC STANDS FOR WILL HAVE A FUTURE IN THE REAL WORLD
Is this amazing show car the stunning future of Vauxhall design? The message from the Geneva Motor Show in March 2007 was a very definite yes, as the world premiere of the GTC Concept was heralded as giving a clear insight into how Vauxhall and Opel's dynamic and refreshing new design language will evolve.
The reaction to the car on its Geneva debut could hardly have been more enthusiastic. And in the words of Andy Gilson, Marketing Director for General Motors UK and Ireland, 'the thinking behind the GTC Concept clearly shows an exciting future for the Vauxhall brand. It embodies the confident, emotional styling that is taking Vauxhall to new horizons. Its combination of exciting lines, superb driving dynamics and exceptional interior flexibility all point towards what Vauxhall's trademark characteristics will be in the future'.
And if you think this is just another showstopper that will soon be forgotten, think again. As Hans Demant, Vice President of Engineering for General Motors Europe adds, 'This car is a
confident ambassador for the brand.previewing the engineering and design cues of our next generation of Vauxhall and Opel products'.
That would mean a very spectacular next generation indeed, as the GTC Concept is one of the most dramatically beautiful, versatile and dynamic designs ever seen from GM. As the GTC Genève Concept did in 2003, it points the way.
On the surface, it is a four-seat coupé powered by a 300PS 2.8-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine, and it features an intelligent, electronically-controlled four-wheel drive system. But that's only the beginning of the GTC Concept's amazing new depth of thinking.
The GTC Concept's looks speak elegantly for themselves, but the theme is clearly sporty and confident, highlighted by powerful details like the prominent grille and badging, distinctive vertical aluminium intakes and outboard LED lights. Its proportions are muscular, its silhouette is sleek, and its surfaces are sophisticated. Standing on 20-inch alloy wheels
