developed bespoke engine mounts that stop almost all engine movement and noise from intruding into the New Corsa's cabin. Road and wind noise is minimal too.

The big-car feel includes the feeling of safety that driver and passengers enjoy. For example, if airbags or seatbelt pretensioners are activated in an accident, the safety system will automatically switch on the hazard warning lights. Should the worst happen, we're protected by a rigid cage of high-strength steel, complemented by a pair of two-stage front airbags, side airbags for both front passengers and head curtain airbags along the entire length of the cabin.

The New Corsa is big on ooh-and-ahh features. Take the SXi's key fob, which can store audio and climate control settings for up to five drivers.

Back on the front as night falls, the Palace Pier is alive with lights, amusements and rides.

As for dinner, we're spoilt for choice but we settle for classic French at the Gingerman on Norfolk Square. And with the New Corsa garaged, we wash down truffle-stuffed pigs trotters and slow roasted milk-fed lamb with an Argentinean merlot, finishing with fig tart and cinnamon ice cream. Heaven.

Then it's back to the Hotel du Vin, easily Brighton's most stylish and snappy. It's been a fine day, and with its cool looks and hot performance, the New Corsa has been the perfect companion. In a city like this, praise doesn't come much higher.
