A CAR THAT TRANSCENDS EVERYDAY EXPECTATIONSA CAR THAT TRANSCENDS EVERYDAY EXPECTATIONS

What's your definition of a good car? One that looks a million dollars, goes well and has the capacity to entertain, even when you're on the Friday night chip-shop run? Words by Mike Askew, pictures by Vauxhall

Our engineers also wanted the Corsa to sound the part. A clause in the current drive-by noise regulations (appreciated by the likes of Ferrari and Aston Martin) allows cars with a very high power to engine capacity ratio (typically supercars) to push the limits in a certain rev range. The Corsa meets the same supercar criteria and as a result has a wonderfully rich and sporty exhaust note.

So performance, as you might expect, is brisk. This fastest ever Corsa can hit 60mph in just 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 140mph - figures that should bring a smile to the face of any enthusiastic driver. The chassis is also a smart piece of engineering. Vauxhall knows that British customers are as demanding as British roads, and so the end result is a focused driving machine with hyper-accurate steering, stubborn resistance to body roll and clever damping that gives a sporty ride without loosening fillings.

The Corsa won't be the only VXR model grabbing the headlines this spring as hot on its heels comes the VXR8. It replaces the much-loved Monaro. Despite sharing much of its predecessor's DNA, the VXR8 is a completely different beast.

Taken directly from the Corvette supercar, it delivers an almighty 420PS at 6000rpm, 550Nm of torque at 4400rpm. VXR8 is more practical and quicker than the old Monaro. Thanks to subtle tweaking of the 6.0 litre LS2 engine, the VXR8 can sprint from 0-60mph in just 4.8 seconds - the first four door VXR model to boast a sub-five second 0-60mph time. It's also the first to offer an automatic gearbox, a six speed self-shifter with a tiptronic function and a sport mode for extra responsiveness.
