FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
HOME TO ROOST
12. COUNTRYWIDE
We’ve all heard the horror stories of battery chickens, highlighted most recently by chef Jamie Oliver. If you’ve got a big enough garden, why not adopt an ex-battery hen and give it a good life? You’ll need a hen house and enclosure, and the hens will need to be kept in their house for the first day or so to home them. Even the pleasure of discovering a shed is far more stimulation than they will have been used to! Your reward will be happy hens – and freshly-laid eggs. You can also sponsor a hen for £17.99, and receive updates on her progress.
VIEW FINDER
13. THE LAKE DISTRICT
A stunning view costs nothing, and can make you feel good to be alive. Top cricketer Paul Nixon loves Causey Pike, for the fantastic views over Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake. Causey Pike is a fell in the Lake District, near Keswick in the Newlands Valley. Even though it has a modest height of 637 metres (2,090 feet) it is one of the most distinctive fells when viewed from the Derwent Water and Keswick area.
