STIKING A CHORD

Small but perfectly formed

Many people associate the ukulele with Hawaii, but it originated in Portugal. Part of the guitar family, it generally has four strings or four courses of strings. In the early part of the 20th century, the ukulele became very popular in America.
It was about this time that the ukulele-banjo was invented, due in part to the popularity of the banjo, and the lack of volume obtained from the soprano ukulele. This hybrid was made popular by English comedian George Formby.

Ukuleles come in a variety of styles and prices; www.djmmusic.com has a wide range, from £10.99 for a beginner’s version.
