Summer 2009
Small Business
Super Jam looks set for success and also set to make Fraser Doherty a very rich man one day. But his grandmother taught him more than how to make jam, she also taught him that business shouldn’t just be about making money. “When we were wee my gran would take scones and jam along to old people’s homes. She’d take my brother and me, as well. He’d play his guitar and I’d tell stories,” recalls Fraser. Now, Fraser does the same thing but on a much larger scale with his Super Jam Tea Parties charity, which runs events bringing old and young people together. “However the business goes in the future, if I can put a smile on elderly people’s faces, even for an hour or two, then I will have achieved something worthwhile,” says Fraser.
The long drive back south gives me plenty of time to think about the business entrepreneurs we have met. Each has taken a different approach but there are common factors such as sheer hard work, offering a quality product with clear benefits that’s right for the market and that people want to buy. Hopefully that strategy will give them all long and successful business futures.
They’ve got some way to go to beat Vauxhall’s 106 years in business
though. And as I finally pull into the motorway services to stop for
fuel, the super-frugal Corsa ecoFLEX leaves me in no doubt that it,
too, is just right for today’s market.
