New driver on the VX Racing team is 20-year-old Andrew Jordan, who made the move to VX Racing after finishing 13th overall in the 2008 HiQ MSA Britsh Touring Car Championship (BTCC), where he competed alongside his father, Mike Jordan. Andrew says he was destined to drive.  “What made me want to be a racing driver? I was born into it. My dad races and my mum is always involved with the team. My granddad used to race as well; it’s definitely in the blood. There are ups and downs but that’s why I love it. Every week is different and you have to work hard to do well, but I like that aspect.” And to aspiring racing drivers, Andrew says:  “Be very determined
and don’t ever give up your dream.”

SHELLING OUT

THE SCALLOP  • Aldeburgh, Suffolk

This striking sculpture on the beach at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, is one of 10 alternative wonders of Britain. Compiled for Vauxhall by travel writer Paul Gogarty, the list was commissioned as a celebration of the best places to explore in Britain. Scallop – a four-metre high steel sculpture – was conceived by Suffolk-born artist Maggi Hambling as a tribute to composer Benjamin Britten, who spent much of his life at Aldeburgh and walked on the beach most afternoons. The phrase “I hear those voices that will not be drowned” (from Britten’s opera Peter Grimes) is pierced through the steel, to be read against the sky. Images of wings rising in flight, swimming fish and the ripple of waves are all suggested by the work, which encourages people to sit and watch the sea.
The other alternative wonders of Britain on the list are • Howick Hall Gardens in Northumberland • the Saxon Chapel of St Peter in Bradwell, Essex • St Donats Castle, Glamorgan • Ed Prynn’s rock sculptures in his garden in Cornwall • the Shell Grotto, Margate • Crosby Beach, Lancashire • Dungeness• Muncaster Castle, Cumbria • and Holy Island off Arran.
